In 2021, I went looking for a new toboggan. I do not have time for fix and repair while traveling or when back home. So, I needed a high-quality, lifetime sled, one that could take hard miles over rough ice and boreal forest portage trails. The sled had to carry my entire camp, plus fuel and propane but still light weight. I needed a sled that would contain the load without having to retie the load while enroute. I reviewed all the advertised higher-priced toboggans on the market. In the end I chose a 9.5-foot Arctic Nomad by Yukon Expedition Sleds. Many a mile later, the toboggan has met my expectations in all areas. I would recommend this product. BLAIR MILLER | Stone Mountain and Folding Mountain Outfitters We use the 9.5 foot nomad with the high front and high sides for freighting and the 5 foot boon docker with the high sides and extra high front for breaking trail. Using other skimmers i have repaired hitches, and bolted UHMV to repair other brands of skimmers at least 30 times. We are pulling huge loads in the 9.5 many times exceeding 1000lbs and have not broke anything yet. I do recommend the extra high front for keeping snow out. Expensive, but for extreme abuse/use i dont think there could be a better set up. Last skimmers we will every buy. Thanks for a great product and service guys! JOEL WILKINSON | CEASER LAKE OUTFITTERS “Anyone looking for a new skimmer, these are the last ones you will ever buy. I own 9 of them and they are the toughest, easiest to pull and lightest I’ve ever had. I’ve hauled 25 Jerry cans full and pulled it through overflow, up hills and through roughtrails with stumps sticking out. They bounce off stumps instead of breaking or cracking. They also slide on the trail and act like a snake in moguls, unlike a box skimmer which slaps after every bump. You will not regret buying one of these!!” Limited Production Each Season We only build a limited number of sleds each year to maintain quality. What Length Snowmobile Sled Should You Use? Choosing the correct snowmobile sled length is one of the most important decisions when setting up a sled for hunting, trapping, ice fishing, or winter expeditions. A sled that is too small will not carry enough gear. A sled that is too large can be difficult to transport and may reduce snowmobile performance in deep snow. At Yukon Expedition Sleds we generally recommend sled length based on three main factors: Trip length (how many days you travel) How you transport the sled to the trailhead Terrain conditions and snowmobile type Recommended Sled Length Based on Trip Duration The most important factor when selecting sled length is how long you plan to stay in the wilderness. Longer trips require significantly more equipment such as food, fuel, shelters, and emergency supplies. 5.5 ft Snowmobile Sled – Best for Day Trips A 5.5 ft sled is ideal for short trips where you return home the same day. Typical uses include: day hunting trips ice fishing short trapline runs hauling firewood near home This size sled provides enough room for essential gear while remaining lightweight and easy to handle. 7.5 ft Snowmobile Sled – Best for 2–3 Day Trips A 7.5 ft sled is a good balance between cargo capacity and maneuverability. This sled length works well for: weekend hunting trips short winter camping trips trapline runs lasting several days It provides significantly more cargo capacity than a 5.5 ft sled while still being manageable for most snowmobile setups. 9.5 ft Snowmobile Sled – Best for Week-Long Trips A 9.5 ft expedition sled is designed for extended trips lasting up to 7 days. These larger sleds are commonly used for: remote hunting expeditions extended trapping trips winter camping expeditions hauling large game animals The extra cargo capacity allows travelers to bring enough supplies for multi-day journeys in remote terrain. Tandem Sleds – Required for Expeditions Over 7 Days For trips longer than a week, most experienced Arctic travelers pull tandem sleds. This allows gear to be separated into multiple sleds, such as: one sled for camping gear one sled for fuel one sled for food and equipment Managing fuel is often the biggest challenge during long expeditions, and tandem sleds provide the cargo capacity required for extended travel. How You Transport the Sled Matters Another major factor when choosing sled length is how you transport the sled to the trailhead. If You Leave Directly From Home People who travel directly from their house can use any sled length, since the sled can remain on the ground and does not need to be lifted. 20 ft or Larger Enclosed Trailer If you own a 20 ft or larger enclosed trailer, a 9.5 ft sled is ideal. This allows the sled to be pulled fully loaded into the trailer, eliminating the need to unload gear or lift the sled. 18 ft Trailer With an 18 ft trailer, a 7.5 ft sled is often the best choice. This size sled can usually be dragged into the trailer while still loaded with gear. Truck Bed or Sled Deck If you regularly lift your sled into the back of a truck or onto a sled deck, the 5.5 ft sled is the easiest size to handle. Shorter sleds are significantly easier to load and unload. Terrain Conditions Also Affect Sled Choice Different terrain conditions can affect how well a sled tows behind a snowmobile. Hard Arctic Terrain On hard-packed Arctic terrain, longer sleds tow more smoothly. A 9.5 ft sled tracks behind the snowmobile very well and provides excellent stability when hauling heavy loads over long distances. Deep Snow, Slush, and Mountain Terrain In deep snow or mountainous terrain, shorter sleds often perform better. A 5.5 ft sled is less likely to get stuck because its shorter length prevents it from becoming wedged in deep ruts or soft snow. This makes smaller sleds easier to maneuver in challenging conditions. Snowmobile Track Size Matters The type of snowmobile used also affects which sled size works best. Large sleds carry very heavy loads, and not all snowmobiles have enough traction to pull them efficiently. Wide Track and Super Wide Track Snowmobiles The best machines for pulling large expedition sleds include: Ski-Doo Skandic Ski-Doo Expedition WT (Wide Track) Ski-Doo Expedition SWT (Super Wide Track) These machines provide the traction required to tow large Yukon Expedition sleds. 16" Track Snowmobiles Snowmobiles with 16-inch tracks can still pull large sleds in certain conditions. They work well on: flat terrain hard packed trails frozen lakes However, they may struggle when pulling heavy loads through: deep snow steep hills overflow or slush This is because they simply do not have enough traction compared to wide-track machines. Quick Guide to Choosing the Right Snowmobile Sled Trip Type Recommended Sled Day trips 5.5 ft sled Weekend / 3-day trips 7.5 ft sled Week-long expeditions 9.5 ft sled Expeditions over 7 days Tandem sleds Responder has largest volume Yukon Expedition Sled Options 5.5 ft Yukon Expedition Sled Best for day trips and deep snow travel. 7.5 ft Yukon Expedition Sled Best for weekend trips and moderate cargo loads. 9.5 ft Yukon Responder Sled Best for long expeditions and hauling large loads. Final Thoughts Choosing the correct snowmobile sled length depends on the type of travel you plan to do, the terrain you encounter, and how you transport your equipment. For most people: 5.5 ft sleds are best for day trips 7.5 ft sleds work well for multi-day trips 9.5 ft sleds are ideal for extended expeditions By selecting the right sled size, you can maximize cargo capacity while ensuring your snowmobile can tow the sled safely and efficiently.

Click here to look at sled models Learn How to Choose the Best Snowmobile Sled Click here Best Snowmobile Sleds for Hunting, Ice Fishing, and Expedition Travel A snowmobile sled is one of the most important tools for winter travel in northern environments. Hunters, trappers, ice fishermen, and winter explorers all rely on sleds to transport cargo across frozen lakes, deep snow, and remote wilderness terrain. The best snowmobile sleds allow people to safely transport gear such as: hunting equipment ice fishing shelters firewood trapping supplies winter camping gear emergency rescue equipment In northern regions like Yukon, Alaska, and northern Canada, dependable sleds are essential for survival and long-distance travel. This guide explains what snowmobile sleds are, why UHMW sleds are the best choice, and which sleds work best for different winter activities. What Is a Snowmobile Sled? A snowmobile sled is a cargo sled designed to be pulled behind a snowmobile (also called a Ski-Doo). These sleds allow users to transport heavy equipment across snow and ice with minimal friction. Several terms are commonly used to describe snowmobile sleds. Freight Sled A freight sled is a large sled used to haul cargo behind a snowmobile. This term is often used by hunters, trappers, and remote residents who transport heavy loads of supplies. Snowmobile Toboggan Historically, a toboggan referred to a wooden sled with a curved front used by Indigenous peoples and early northern travelers. Today, the term snowmobile toboggan is widely used to describe any sled designed to slide across snow while being pulled by: manpower gravity a snowmobile Cargo Sled A cargo sled is a general term used to describe any sled designed to haul equipment across snow. Expedition Sled An expedition sled is a large cargo sled capable of carrying enough supplies for multi-day winter travel. These sleds are used for remote hunting trips, trapping lines, winter camping expeditions, and long-distance Arctic travel. The term Expedition Sled was popularized by Yukon Expedition Sleds and is now widely used to describe large, heavy-duty snowmobile sleds designed for extreme conditions. Why UHMW Sleds Are Best for Snowmobiles The material used to build a sled is one of the most important factors affecting durability and performance. The best snowmobile sleds are made from UHMW (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene). UHMW is an extremely durable plastic used in industries that require extreme abrasion resistance and impact strength. Flexible to −107°C UHMW remains flexible in extreme cold temperatures down to −107°C. This flexibility prevents the sled from cracking when striking rocks, trees, or hard ice. Extremely High Impact Resistance UHMW has higher impact resistance than nearly any other material suitable for sled construction. This makes it ideal for sleds used in harsh Arctic environments. Exceptional Abrasion Resistance UHMW has extraordinary wear resistance. Tests show that UHMW lasts up to 13 times longer than steel of the same thickness when dragged across sand or gravel. This durability is why UHMW sleds are widely considered the longest-lasting sleds available for snowmobile towing. Best Snowmobile Sleds for Different Uses Different winter activities require different sled sizes and designs. Best Hunting Sled Hunting sleds must be large enough to haul gear into remote areas and recover harvested animals. The Yukon Expedition Sled is widely used by northern hunters because it offers large cargo capacity while remaining lightweight enough to tow efficiently behind a snowmobile. Best Ice Fishing Sled Ice fishermen transport large amounts of equipment including: shelters heaters augers sonar units rods and tackle A durable UHMW snowmobile sled allows anglers to carry all their equipment safely across frozen lakes. Best Expedition Sled For long winter journeys and multi-day wilderness travel, expedition sleds provide the cargo capacity required to transport: food supplies winter tents fuel survival gear Large expedition sleds are designed to travel long distances behind powerful utility snowmobiles. Best Firewood Hauling Sled Hauling firewood is one of the most common uses for snowmobile sleds in northern communities. A large UHMW freight sled allows people to haul significantly more firewood than would be possible with an ATV trailer because sleds slide across snow with extremely low friction. Why Yukon Expedition Sleds Are Built for the Arctic Yukon Expedition Sleds are designed and built in Whitehorse, Yukon, specifically for extreme Arctic and sub-Arctic conditions. These sleds are engineered to perform reliably in temperatures below −40°C. Designed for Arctic Travel Long-distance winter travel requires large cargo capacity. Hunters and explorers often travel hundreds of kilometers across remote terrain where reliability is critical. Fuel Efficient Towing Yukon Expedition Sleds are lighter than many comparable sleds. Their flexible hitch design acts like a ramp that helps guide the sled over obstacles, reducing drag. Some sled designs with rigid steel hitches can require 25% more fuel when towing heavy loads over rough terrain. Extreme Real-World Testing Yukon Expedition Sleds have been continuously tested and improved for over 11 years by hunters, trappers, and remote residents across the Arctic. Customers consistently report that Yukon Expedition Sleds are the longest-lasting and most dependable sleds available for Arctic travel. The company also maintains 5-star reviews on Google and Facebook from customers who depend on these sleds in real-world conditions. Real World Use of Snowmobile Sleds Snowmobile sleds are used across northern regions for many essential winter activities. Trapping Trappers depend on sleds to haul: traps bait firewood fuel trapped animals A dependable sled is essential for operating traplines in remote wilderness. Hauling Firewood In many remote communities people must travel long distances to collect dry firewood. Snowmobile sleds allow residents to haul much larger loads of wood than would be possible using trailers. Winter Camping Winter camping requires far more equipment than summer camping. Many travelers pull tandem sleds to carry tents, sleeping gear, food, and fuel separately. Large expedition sleds provide the cargo volume needed for extended winter adventures. Rescue Operations Search and rescue teams use cargo sleds to transport equipment required for multi-day rescue missions in remote winter environments. Arctic Expeditions Expeditions involve long journeys across remote terrain where travelers must be fully self-sufficient. Large cargo sleds reduce the number of snowmobiles required by allowing more gear to be transported per load. Northern Hunting In the Yukon, hunters sometimes travel 300 kilometers per day in temperatures below −40°C while tracking animals such as wood bison. When successful, hunters require dependable sleds capable of hauling large quantities of meat. Hunters report fitting 11 caribou in a 9.5-foot Yukon Responder sled. [View Yukon Bigfoot Trail Groomer] Yukon Trapper Box – Best Ski-Doo Cargo Box for Expedition, Tundra, and Skandic The Yukon Trapper Box is one of the most durable Ski-Doo cargo box systems available for utility snowmobiles. Designed specifically for machines like the Ski-Doo Expedition, Ski-Doo Tundra, and Ski-Doo Skandic, this UHMW cargo platform mounts securely to the rear rack of your snowmobile and allows you to safely transport essential gear while travelling in remote winter terrain. Unlike traditional snowmobile storage boxes, the Yukon Trapper Box is built from ultra-durable UHMW plastic, making it ideal for extreme northern environments where temperatures regularly drop below −40°C. This heavy-duty snowmobile cargo box system keeps valuable equipment organized and protected while eliminating the need to throw fragile gear into a sled where it can bounce, rattle, and break during travel. Built for Hunters, Trappers, and Ice Fishermen The Yukon Trapper Box was designed for people who rely on their Ski-Doo snowmobiles for real work in the backcountry. It provides a solid UHMW mounting platform that allows operators to securely carry essential equipment directly on the snowmobile. Available accessory mounts allow users to transport: chainsaws rifles and shotguns fishing rods ice augers auger fuel chainsaw fuel and bar oil Garmin Panoptix sonar systems lunch and food supplies emergency survival gear This makes the Yukon Trapper Box one of the most versatile snowmobile cargo storage systems available. Protect Your Gear From Damage Many snowmobile operators store equipment in a sled while travelling. However, rough terrain can cause gear to bounce and vibrate, which can damage sensitive equipment such as: electronics fishing gear chainsaws fuel containers The Yukon Trapper Box keeps critical equipment mounted securely on the snowmobile, preventing damage while also keeping important gear easily accessible. Universal Cargo System That Moves to Your Next Snowmobile One of the biggest advantages of the Yukon Trapper Box is its modular accessory system. All gear mounts attach directly to the Trapper Box rather than to the snowmobile itself. This means when you upgrade your snowmobile, you can simply transfer the box and accessories to the new machine. This eliminates the need to purchase expensive factory accessories every time a new snowmobile is purchased. Built From UHMW for Extreme Arctic Durability Like all Yukon Expedition products, the Trapper Box is manufactured from Ultra High Molecular Weight (UHMW) polyethylene, one of the most durable plastics available. UHMW provides several advantages over traditional snowmobile cargo boxes: extremely high impact resistance flexibility in extreme cold temperatures superior abrasion resistance long service life in harsh environments This makes the Yukon Trapper Box ideal for Arctic travel, hunting expeditions, trapping operations, and ice fishing trips. Compatible With Ski-Doo Utility Snowmobiles The Yukon Trapper Box is designed to fit many popular Ski-Doo utility snowmobiles, including: Ski-Doo Expedition Ski-Doo Tundra Ski-Doo Skandic These machines are widely used by hunters, trappers, and remote northern residents who require dependable cargo hauling capability.
