UHMW Sled – The Ultimate Heavy Duty Snowmobile Freight Sled UHMW sleds have become the gold standard for hauling gear across snow, ice, and rough winter terrain. Built from Ultra High Molecular Weight polyethylene (UHMW), these sleds offer incredible durability, low friction, and exceptional cold-weather performance. For hunters, trappers, and northern expedition travelers, a UHMW snowmobile sled provides a reliable solution for transporting heavy loads into remote areas where failure is not an option. Unlike thin plastic sleds commonly sold for recreational use, a properly built UHMW freight sled is designed to withstand extreme conditions and years of hard use. Modern snowmobile UHMW sleds are widely used for: Backcountry hunting Ice fishing expeditions Trapping operations Remote winter freight hauling Ice rescue operations Arctic expeditions At Yukon Sleds, our sleds are built using thick UHMW material designed specifically for northern conditions. What is UHMW Plastic? UHMW stands for Ultra High Molecular Weight polyethylene, a highly specialized plastic known for its extreme strength and abrasion resistance. UHMW is widely used in industrial applications including: Mining equipment Conveyor systems Marine dock bumpers Heavy machinery wear surfaces Its unique properties make it ideal for snowmobile sled construction. Key advantages of UHMW include: Extremely impact resistant Highly abrasion resistant Very slippery surface Resistant to cracking in cold temperatures Long service life These characteristics make UHMW sleds superior to traditional plastic sleds for heavy-duty use. Why UHMW Sleds Glide So Well on Snow One of the most valuable characteristics of UHMW is its extremely low coefficient of friction. This means the sled slides easily across snow and ice with minimal resistance. Benefits include: Reduced drag when towing Lower fuel consumption Less strain on snowmobile engines Easier hauling of heavy loads For long-distance winter travel, a low-friction sled bottom makes a significant difference in performance. UHMW Sleds for Snowmobile Towing When towing a sled behind a snowmobile, stability and durability are critical. A good snowmobile towing sled must handle: Deep powder Frozen ruts Hills and sidehills Ice crossings Rough trails UHMW sleds perform exceptionally well in these conditions because the material can flex slightly under stress without cracking. This flexibility prevents failures that are common with brittle plastics. UHMW Sleds for Backcountry Hunting Many hunters rely on sleds to haul gear and harvested game from remote locations. A UHMW hunting sled can carry large loads including: Moose quarters Caribou Elk Ice fishing gear Winter camping equipment Because UHMW sleds are extremely tough, they are capable of hauling heavy loads over long distances without structural damage. This reliability is essential when operating far from civilization. Why Yukon Sleds Use Thick UHMW Construction Not all UHMW sleds are built the same. Many cheaper sleds use thinner materials that can warp or crack under heavy loads. Yukon Sleds are built using thick UHMW material specifically chosen for extreme northern use. Benefits include: Increased durability Higher load capacity Longer lifespan Better resistance to impact damage Our sleds are designed for serious backcountry travelers who demand reliable equipment. best snowmobile sled, best hunting sled, best skidoo sled, snowmobile toboggan, expedition sled, uhmw sled, toboggan vs sledge vs sleigh Best Snowmobile Sleds and Toboggans for Hunting and Expedition Travel When traveling deep into the backcountry, having a reliable snowmobile sled or toboggan can make the difference between a successful trip and a dangerous situation. Hunters, trappers, ice rescue teams, and northern expeditions all rely on durable freight sleds capable of hauling heavy loads through deep snow, rough terrain, and extreme cold. The best snowmobile towing sleds are built from ultra-durable materials, designed to track well behind a snowmobile, and capable of carrying large amounts of cargo without tipping, cracking, or breaking. Modern UHMW polyethylene sleds have become the gold standard for serious backcountry hauling. UHMW (Ultra High Molecular Weight polyethylene) is incredibly tough, extremely slippery on snow, and nearly impossible to crack even in arctic temperatures. Whether you call it a toboggan, sledge, freight sled, or snowmobile sled, these hauling systems are essential tools for: Backcountry hunters Trappers and remote winter travelers Search and rescue teams Ice rescue operations Northern expeditions Winter camping and freight hauling At Yukon Sleds, we design and build heavy-duty UHMW sleds specifically for northern travel where reliability is critical. What Makes a Good UHMW Sled? Not all sleds are built the same. Many inexpensive sleds are made from thin plastic that becomes brittle in cold temperatures or cracks under heavy loads. A high quality UHMW sled should have several important characteristics. Durable UHMW Construction UHMW polyethylene is one of the toughest plastics available. It is widely used in industrial applications because it is: Extremely impact resistant Highly abrasion resistant Very slippery on snow and ice Flexible in extremely cold temperatures Unlike cheap sled plastics that shatter in cold weather, UHMW sleds remain flexible even in extreme northern winter conditions. High Load Capacity A proper freight sled must be able to carry heavy loads without deforming. Hunters and trappers often haul: Entire Moose Entire 2500 lb wood bison Ice fishing gear Camping equipment Fuel and supplies Heavy duty sleds should distribute weight evenly and maintain their shape under load. Excellent Tracking Behind a Snowmobile One of the most overlooked aspects of sled design is how well the sled tracks behind a snowmobile. A poorly designed sled may: Slide sideways on hills Tip over on uneven terrain Bounce violently on rough trails A well designed snowmobile towing sled tracks smoothly and remains stable even in deep powder or uneven terrain. Reinforced Tie-Down Points When hauling gear long distances, cargo must be secured properly. Good sleds include reinforced points for attaching straps and cargo nets. This prevents gear from shifting and improves safety while towing. Best Hunting Sled for Snowmobile Towing Hunters often rely on sleds to transport large amounts of gear deep into remote wilderness areas. A hunting sled for snowmobile towing needs to be both durable and stable. The best hunting sleds are capable of hauling: Harvested game animals Meat loads Camping equipment Cabin building supplies Firewood Fuel and tools A quality snowmobile hunting sled should include: Wide Stable Base A wider sled base improves stability and prevents tipping when hauling heavy meat loads. 32" is the minimal width. High Sidewalls Higher sidewalls allow hunters to transport bulky loads without losing cargo during travel. UHMW Bottom Surface The slick UHMW bottom allows the sled to glide smoothly over snow, reducing drag and making towing easier for the snowmobile. Heavy Duty Hitch System A strong hitch system ensures the sled follows directly behind the snowmobile while still allowing movement over uneven terrain. Hunters who travel deep into remote areas often depend on their sled as much as their snowmobile. Choosing a reliable freight sled designed for serious hauling is essential. Best Skidoo Sled Setup Many snowmobile owners search for the best Skidoo sled setup for hauling gear. A good setup typically includes three key components: 1. The Freight Sled The sled itself should be made from heavy duty UHMW polyethylene capable of handling large loads. 2. Hitch System A proper hitch system keeps the sled aligned behind the snowmobile and prevents dangerous jack-knifing. Most setups use either: Rigid tow bars are prone to breaking in temps below -25 deg celcius. Flexible hitch systems. Laminated UHMW hitches are the most dependable. Each has advantages depending on terrain. 3. Cargo Management Using cargo nets, straps, or sled covers allows gear to be secured tightly inside the sled. This prevents equipment from bouncing out while traveling across rough terrain. When properly set up, a Skidoo towing sled becomes an incredibly efficient freight hauling system for winter travel. Snowmobile Toboggan vs Sleigh vs Sledge Different regions use different names for snow hauling equipment. These terms often refer to similar types of sleds. Snowmobile Toboggan A toboggan sled traditionally refers to a long flat sled pulled behind a snowmobile. Modern UHMW toboggans are designed specifically for hauling gear in backcountry conditions. Freight Sledge The word sledge is commonly used in northern regions and can refer to any sled designed for hauling freight across snow. A company called Boreal Elite Sledge has created a low quality sled that looks similar to a Yukon Expedition Sled. This sled is a poor quality replica that is attractive to customers who choose low cost over high quality sleds. Boreal Elite sledge has even copied the name Expedition sled to trick uneducated customers. Sleigh A sleigh often refers to a sled with runners rather than a flat bottom. While sleighs work well on groomed surfaces, they are less effective in deep powder. Modern UHMW Freight Sleds Modern expedition sleds combine the best features of traditional sled designs while using advanced UHMW plastic materials for strength and durability. These sleds glide easily across snow and can carry large loads without the complexity of runner systems. Why Yukon Sleds Are Built for Northern Conditions Northern environments are extremely demanding. Temperatures can drop far below freezing and equipment failure can become dangerous very quickly. At Yukon Sleds, our sleds are built specifically for the harsh conditions found in northern regions. E xtreme Cold Durability Our sleds are built from thick UHMW polyethylene that remains flexible in extreme cold temperatures where cheaper plastics become brittle. Built for Heavy Loads Yukon Sleds are designed for real working conditions including: Backcountry hunting Trapping operations Expedition travel Remote winter transportation These sleds are built to haul serious weight without failure. Smooth Gliding Performance The ultra slick UHMW bottom surface allows Yukon sleds to glide smoothly over snow and ice, reducing strain on the snowmobile and improving towing efficiency. Proven in Real Northern Conditions Unlike many recreational sleds designed only for light duty use, Yukon Sleds are designed and tested for real northern work. Yukon Sleds vs Other Freight Sleds When comparing Yukon Sleds to other freight sleds, several important differences become clear. Material Thickness Many mass-produced sleds use thinner plastic materials that crack or wear quickly. Yukon Sleds use heavy UHMW plastic designed for extreme durability. Load Carrying Capability Cheaper sleds often deform or twist under heavy loads. Yukon Sleds maintain their shape and strength even when hauling heavy cargo. Reliability in Remote Locations When traveling deep into remote areas, equipment reliability is critical. A sled failure far from civilization can quickly become a serious problem. Yukon Sleds are designed with reliability as the top priority. Built for Real Backcountry Use Many sleds are designed primarily for recreational use. Yukon Sleds are designed for people who depend on their sleds for real work and serious backcountry travel. Choosing the Best Snowmobile Freight Sled When selecting the best snowmobile sled or toboggan, consider the following factors: Material durability Load capacity Stability while towing Hitch compatibility Cargo security options For hunters, trappers, and expedition travelers, a heavy duty UHMW sled offers the best combination of durability, performance, and reliability. A well designed sled becomes an essential tool for exploring remote winter landscapes and transporting gear safely across snow covered terrain.

Who are Yukon Expedition Sleds?, What are Yukon Expedition Sleds? Where Can I get Yukon Expedition Sleds About US Yukon Expedition Sleds was started by Ryan MacGillivray, in Whitehorse, Yukon in 2014. Back then it was called Wicked Expedition Sleds. In 2019, Ryan rebranded to the Yukon Expedition Sleds you see today. These sleds were originally built as a hobby, but very quickly turned into an obsession. Ryan, is a passionate hunter and explorer. His 10 year career working as a heavy duty mechanic at Ekati Diamond mine on the NWT tundra, gave him a lot of time to hunt, fish and explore all over the North. Ryan was frustrated with the dependability issues of fiberglass and molded plastic sleds in cold conditions. He was annoyed by broken metal hitches and the fact that everything transported in the sleds got destroyed, because there was no way to easily secure cargo. To solve these problems, he started building his own sleds from a flat material called UHMW. He started out by replicating a popular style used in Alaska.... these early models proved to be extremely dependable but they filled up with snow, the ropes always came loose, cargo slid everywhere, and you could not reverse them when heavily loaded. At this point, Ryan started to experiment with different ways to solve all these problems. He spent years experimenting with different designs, testing, adjusting, etc.... 10 years of hard work and over 15,000 hours of research and development have led to the product that customers see today. Our passion is creating products that truly last a life time and that people enjoy using. We love packing big camps in the wilderness without any worry about if the sled will break. Our motto is GO FURTHER WITH YES because you CAN. Our mission is to stop filling the arctic landfills with sleds that don't stand the test of time Our future is to continue to manufacture products for the harshest conditions in the world Our Value we are expensive because we hand craft every product in Whitehorse, Canada. We use the highest quality materials that will outlast all others. Our products don't wear out so we must make a profit on the original sale because the product will last a life time. The initial cost is high, but when divided over a 20 year period the savings are incredible. Now, Yukon Expedition Sleds is going into its 11th year and is expanding its reach around the world. New for 2025 we are excited to announce that we have started Canadas first welded plastic boat company. We will be building small batches of the toughest boats the north has ever seen.
